Zurich’s climate is hard on outdoor surfaces. The city receives regular rainfall throughout the year, and temperatures drop sharply in winter. These conditions create the ideal environment for moss, algae, and organic staining to develop on terraces, balconies, and patios.
A terrace that looks neglected is not always the result of poor upkeep. It is often a matter of climate and material. Stone, tile, and wood surfaces all attract biological growth in damp conditions. Once established, moss and algae spread quickly and become slippery underfoot.
Apartment Cleaning Zurich offers professional terrace cleaning in Zurich for residential apartments. We remove moss, algae, stains, and built-up grime from all common outdoor surface types. The result is a clean, safe terrace that is ready for use — and protected from further deterioration.

Outdoor surfaces accumulate several types of dirt and biological growth. Each one requires a different treatment. We address all of the following in a single service visit:
• Moss — grows in damp, shaded areas and embeds into porous stone and tile surfaces
• Algae — appears as green or black discolouration on stone, concrete, and grout lines
• Lichen — a slower-growing crust that bonds tightly to stone and requires targeted treatment to remove
• Weather stains — rust marks from metal furniture, tannin stains from wooden planters, and general grey discolouration from mineral deposits
• Pollen and dust buildup — particularly heavy in spring and early summer, leaves a fine film on all horizontal surfaces
• Bird droppings — acidic and damaging to stone and wood if left untreated for extended periods
• General outdoor grime — accumulated dirt from rain splash, wind, and foot traffic
If your terrace has a specific type of staining or contamination not listed above, contact us before booking. We assess unusual cases individually.
Different outdoor materials require different cleaning pressure, products, and methods. Using the wrong approach causes permanent surface damage. We match our technique to your specific terrace material.
Granite, sandstone, and slate are durable but porous. We clean with low-to-medium pressure and stone-safe products, applying post-clean treatments to slow moss and algae growth.
Tiled terraces are low-maintenance but grout lines absorb dirt and organic matter. We clean surfaces and grout thoroughly, leaving an even, residue-free finish.
Wood decks are delicate. We use low-pressure cleaning with wood-safe detergents, lifting grime without damaging fibres. Optional protective oil or sealant restores appearance and adds protection.
Robust but stain-prone, concrete floors are treated with targeted pressure and stain removal techniques. Results depend on surface age and depth of contamination.
Moss and algae grow in joints between bricks. We clean both the surface and jointing carefully, preserving the integrity of the paving.
Zurich receives approximately 1,100 millimetres of rainfall per year. This is significantly above the European average. Persistent moisture is the primary driver of moss and algae growth on outdoor surfaces.
In winter, freeze-thaw cycles open micro-cracks in stone and concrete. Moss and biological matter enter these cracks and expand them further over time. Surfaces that appear structurally sound can deteriorate faster than expected when biological growth goes untreated.
Moss and algae also make outdoor surfaces slippery when wet. This is a safety issue as well as an aesthetic one. A terrace with visible biological growth is a slip hazard during Zurich’s frequent rain periods.
Annual cleaning prevents buildup from becoming embedded and harder to remove. It also protects the surface material and extends the interval before resurfacing or replacement is needed.
Spring and autumn are the two most practical times for terrace cleaning in Zurich.
Spring cleaning — ideally in April or May — removes the moss and algae that established over winter and clears pollen and debris before the outdoor season begins. A clean terrace in May means it is ready to use immediately when temperatures rise.
Autumn cleaning — in September or October — removes summer dust, pollen, and organic matter before winter. This reduces the amount of biological material available to moss and algae during the damp, cold months. Surfaces that go into winter clean take longer to redevelop growth.
If your terrace is heavily shaded or north-facing, you may benefit from cleaning both in spring and autumn. Shaded surfaces retain moisture longer and develop moss faster than south-facing terraces with more sun exposure.
Our terrace cleaning process follows the same structured approach for every job:
1. Book and confirm. Tell us your terrace size, surface type, and the main issues you want addressed. We confirm the appointment and advise on any access or preparation needed.
2. We assess the surface on arrival. Before starting, we check the material condition, identify the type and extent of biological growth, and select the appropriate pressure level and products for your surface.
3. We clean systematically. We work across the full surface area, addressing moss, algae, staining, and grime. Drainage points and edges are cleaned carefully to avoid blockage or overflow.
4. We check the result and advise. After cleaning, we inspect the surface and flag any areas that may benefit from follow-up treatment or where staining is too deep to remove in a single clean. We do not leave without giving you an honest assessment.
Most terraces take between one and three hours. Larger areas or heavily contaminated surfaces may take longer. We give you a time estimate when you book.
